overview

A sketchbook exploration of botanical and insect forms — scanned directly from analog ink and brush. 33 sketches, drawn over 33 days, for a 33rd birthday gift from self to self. context

This personal project was a response to taking a step away from the screen and a consistent practice in analog format, combined with setting a personal goal of creation for the sake of it without a specific audience or timeline or budget. The simple act of turning an observation into something anew on paper. The process reintroduced a creative practice of preceived mistakes that turn into happy destiniess, that wings are built and never break, and there is no better designer than nature.

The brief

HBR is seeking to produce a short animated infographic for the article “Building Healthy Habits When You’re Truly Exhausted” written by Author Elizabeth Grace Saunders to be featured on their YouTube channel.

The goal is to make the messages in
the article clearly communicated and also appeal to their primary audience.

visual cues

Composition style: minimalist and clean, ample white space to help keep the focus on the core message withoutvisual clutter. Well-balanced.

Colour psychology: Muted desaturated tones to give a sophisticated look that feels more mature and less ‘playful’- ideal for professional audience. Shades of blue, dark greens, navy blue, and slate tones evoke trust, professionalism, and intelligence — qualities that align well with HBR’s content. Warm greys add sophistication and balance without being overly distracting. Accent colours in poppy red to signify energy, light gold to convey prestige and excellence, and turquoise to welcome growth.

Illustration style: flat designs with subtle gradients to add depth without overpowering visuals. The style is clean and modern, helping to maintain the simplicity that this audience appreciates.Isometric illustration forrepresenting the building of the habits and the foundational steps. Add depth while remaining professional.

“The key to habit change: Moving forward but not putting too much pressure on yourself at any one time.”

Character illustration should be gender neutral respecting diversity at HBR. Data driven visuals such as line charts or number counter calendar.

Motion and Animation style: subtle transitions and effects, guiding the viewer through the information. Metaphor of being caught in a cycle blending into a 24hr clock, to path, to blocks of sleep, nourishment, and movement — the pillars needed to build a foundation. Smooth and purposeful movement. Small, tasteful kinetic typography like slide or fade.
